The 17th annual Quilt Show – eagerly anticipated by quilt lovers and hosted by First Church of Christ, Congregational in East Haddam – will be held on Oct. 6 through Oct. 7, 2012 with homemade quilts and needlecrafts by more than 100 exhibitors, some available for sale.
The quilts are displayed in the historic 1794 meetinghouse designed by famed architect Lavius Filmore, which features a flying pulpit, star-spangled domed ceiling and many blown-glass window panes.
The light-filled interior enhances the vibrant kaleidoscope of colors and intricate patterns of the quilts.
The show is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at First Church, 499 Town St. in East Haddam. Admission is $5. All proceeds benefit First Church.
The show, which draws exhibitors and visitors from across New England, also features a boutique of jewelry, crafts and quilt supplies.
Refreshments are available throughout the day, including homemade soups, pies and other desserts, and beverages.
A highlight of the show is a raffle of a handmade quilt. The 2012 quilt is “Sunflower” an original design by Betty Haines, a long-time church member and co-chair of the quilt show committee.
“Sunflower” is machine pieced, hand-quilted and appliquéd with hand embroidery. Raffle tickets are $1. The drawing is Sunday afternoon.
“There is a lot of talent on display and every year the show is different,” said Betty Haines. “This is a great opportunity to learn about quilting or to just appreciate the quilts for the works of art and family history that they are.”
