Employers – register now for CT Dept of Labor job fairs

The Connecticut Department of Labor’s “Connecticut Career Fair” series returns this spring, with regional events scheduled for Manchester, East Hartford and Danbury – including one specifically for Connecticut residents who have served in the Armed Services, the Connecticut National Guard and the Reserves.

“This is the agency’s 17th year providing job and career fairs with the goal of matching employers with potential employees,” said State Labor Commissioner Sharon M. Palmer.

“Our Connecticut Career Fair series traditionally attracts thousands of job seekers and hundreds of businesses each year, and each event offers excellent opportunities for companies to meet qualified, job-ready candidates who have technical, administrative, managerial or production backgrounds,” Commissioner Palmer said.

Employers interested in participating in any of the job fairs can register on the DOL’s JobFair Web site www.ctjobfairs.com

Since 1996, the Labor Department has partnered with colleges, workforce boards, towns and cities, and local Chambers of Commerce to provide regional fairs that employers often cite as Connecticut’s premiere recruiting events.

Jobseekers are advised to bring plenty of résumés to the job fair they plan to attend and schedule enough time to meet with several company representatives.

To ensure that a résumé properly showcases your skills and experience, the Department of Labor suggests contacting the nearest CTWorks Career Center to request a no-cost résumé review provided by DOL’s professional résumé writers.

(Editor’s note: Many companies today prefer that you submit your résumé online, in addition to any copies you may leave with recruiters at the job fairs. Recruiters also will often refer you to their company’s website to see which jobs are available – so, bring something to record this information. Job fairs do offer an opportunity to ask questions about a company face-to-face, and to leave a good impression… so it pays to also dress professionally, regardless of the kinds of jobs you are interested in.)

The three DOL career fairs planned for this spring are:

• Manchester Career Fair: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 22 at Manchester Community College (GreatPathAcademy Gym), 60 Bidwell St., Manchester.

• Heroes 4 Hire Fair: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 16 – Rentschler Field, East Hartford – For Connecticut residents who have served in the Armed Services, the Connecticut National Guard and the Reserves. Co-sponsored by the Connecticut Veterans’ Administration .

• Danbury Career Fair: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 12 at Ethan Allen Inn (hotel ballroom), 21 Lake Avenue Extension, Danbury. Co-sponsored by Cumulus Media and the Danbury Chamber of Commerce

Job seekers should check the DOL website in the coming weeks to find out which companies will be represented at the job fairs. The site also offers links to other helpful resources for job seekers.
