The East Haddam Lions are hoping you have some cool stuff to donate to the club’s annual auction and tag sale, which will be held on July 13.

The tag sale opens at 8 a.m. and the auction will be held at 10 a.m. at the Old Grange Hall, 488 Town St. in East Haddam.

WFSB Channel 3′s Kevin Hogan will be the guest auctioneer.

A series of  “Conscious Discipline” workshops begins on Wednesday, May 22 at 6 p.m. sponsored by the East Haddam Early Childhood Council.

A vigil will be held today (May 20) at 3 p.m. on the campus of Eastern Connecticut State University, to gather in memory of 20-year-old Alyssiah Wiley, who was found dead after weeks of searching.

Wiley was reported missing on April 24, but was last seen on Main Street in Willimantic on April 20. She had told friends and roommates she was going home, to West Haven, CT.

Police arrest suspect in the murder of ECSU student

CT State Police report that the remains found with the aid of police dogs on Friday in Trumbull near the Bridgeport line is the body of the missing Eastern Connecticut State University student Alyssiah Wiley.

Police also say they have arrested a suspect in connection with her death, a 30-year-old man, Jermaine Richards, of Bridgeport.

There are many plants with a bad reputation that might surprise those of us who garden or enjoy enhancing the landscapes around our homes.

For example, the shrubby Japanese barberry, which is an attractive plant originally considered a beneficial alternative to another native shrub that suffered from disease issues.

However, the Japanese barberry shrub not only is invasive – meaning it grows so quickly and so widely it chokes out native or desirable plants – researchers also say there’s a link between these “ornamental” plants and Lyme Disease.

Electors will be asked to vote on the proposed 2013-14 budget as follows:

Shall the Town of East Haddam budget of $28,700,076 as recommended by the Board of Finance for fiscal year 2013-2014 be approved?

Absentee ballots are now available at the Town Clerk’s Office.
