Delving deeper into Malloy’s proposed state budget

February 21, 2013 Letters to Editor No Comments
In all, there is more than $3 billion in borrowing. In order to stay under the constitutional spending cap, Gov. Malloy has changed the rules by which spending is calculated.

In all, there is more than $3 billion in borrowing. In order to stay under the constitutional spending cap, Gov. Malloy has changed the rules by which spending is calculated.

- Letter to the Editor by Rep. Melissa Ziobron

When I originally reviewed Gov. Malloy’s budget proposal, I did not like what I saw, but, decided to wait until I got deeper into the details before passing judgment over his proposal. Now that I have had time to review it in more detail, sadly I think the budget proposal is worse than I originally thought.

Two years ago, Gov. Malloy had an opportunity to restructure state government and put it in a better position to recover from the economic difficulties and deficit plaguing the state for years. Unfortunately, the idea that one should “never let a crisis go to waste” was lost on his administration.

Instead of shrinking government and reducing spending, the Governor and his legislative supporters have increased spending and raised taxes by a record $1.8 billion.

Connecticut militia members sue state

Members of one of Connecticut’s ceremonial militia units are suing the state for allegedly seizing $10,000 worth of private ammunition, terminating a lease and failing to pay members for training.

State officials claim the unit – the 1st Company Governor’s Foot Guard – has not kept its weapons and ammunition secure, and that it was within the state’s right to terminate the lease and not pay the members for training.

The militia unit’s board of trustees do not control the 1st Company; under a unique statutory arrangement dating back to 1885, the state created a special corporate entity so the trustees could own and maintain the unit’s armory.

Although the unit is ceremonial in function today, it still falls under the command of Brig. Gen. Thaddeus Martin, adjutant general of the Connecticut Military Department.

We most warmly invite you once again to join with us.

This year promises even more over-the-top fun with our featured act, Kevin Keefe’s One-Man Circus in-a-Suitcase.

Performed all over the world to amazed audiences, this circus of crazy clown wisdom emerges unbelievably from a single suitcase: tent, band, lights, the boisterous ringmaster Steve Fitzpatrick, the officious Mervin Merkle, the incredible Bumbilini Family, the Magician to the Stars Clyde Zerbini, and a Keefer-an innocent trying to run away and join the circus.

However, the most important performers are invited from the audience.

By Brenda Sullivan | HTNP News Editor

At a press conference Monday evening (Feb. 11), Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy fielded questions from reporters, including one about whether the state was adequately prepared for Storm Charlotte – in light of recommendations made by the Two Storm Task Force that looked at problems that arose during Tropical Storm Irene and the recent hurricane, Storm Sandy.

Gov. Malloy responded by saying that while his opinion might make some people unhappy, “we’re in a time of climate turmoil,” and that planning needs to get underway “on an expedited basis” for more of these kinds of events.

“We need to make sure we have the resources to respond to these kinds of incidences,” he said, and pointed to the fact that this is the fifth emergency/disaster declaration within a period of months.

CT Dept of Ag to crack down on misuse of Connecticut Grown label

CONNECTICUT GROWN logo CT Dept Ag 2013

“While we do not believe misuse of the Connecticut Grown label is widespread, we recognize that trust is quickly damaged in the rare instances it does occur. Strict protection of the Connecticut Grown brand protects not only consumers seeking out local foods and other agricultural products, but also the thousands of honest farm families in Connecticut working long, hard hours each day to produce those items.” – CT Agriculture Commissioner Stephen Reviczky
